The 26 Best Auto Show Concept Cars Of The 21st Century

Citroen Numero 9 Concept
Are auto shows dying? Many auto journalists think so. Do new vehicles all look the same? Perhaps to you, a consumer in the compact car category. Are concept cars with no future as a production vehicle annoying? In a sense.

But as art, concept cars serve a purpose as examples of what an automakers design department can do when given a huge budget, few parameters, and no practicality or production concerns.

We can hope automobile manufacturers will be able to keep a few secrets in the lead up to January 2015s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. Maybe there will be something special, not just production versions of upcoming luxury crossovers and flashier potential versions of existing cars, but truly special design.

Interesting surfaces. Inventive detailing. New ideas.

If so, this list will be in need of an update. Heading in to the Detroit auto show, however, these are our 26 favourites of the 21st century. You will disagree. Wholeheartedly, we suspect.

26. Dodge Kahuna
Dodge Kahuna concept
Both ahead of and behind the times, the Kahuna is just one of a dozen or more Chrysler Group concepts we could have placed on this list if we werent interested in spreading the wealth around.

25. Lexus LF-LC
Lexus LF-LC
The LF-LC is an opinion divider, but it signaled that Lexus could break free from convention. Quite nicely.

24. Jeep Willys 2
Jeep Willys 2
Is it easier for Jeep to impress us with something crazy because the core elements never change? Or is it more difficult because there are untouchable elements?

23. Volvo T6 Roadster
Volvo T6 roadster
Some concepts are great because they fit the image of the company. Others, like the T6 Roadster, are perfect because they come completely out of the blue.

22. Mazda Ibuki
Mazda Ibuki concept
This is not what all Miata enthusiasts wanted to see, but it was a whole new take, vital for a car that could have devolved into a painfully slow evolutionary process.

21. Hyundai HCD-14
Hyundai HCD-14 concept
The HCD is a little bit crazy. OK, its a lot a bit crazy. Its very, truly, overwhelmingly crazy. But it works.

20. Ford Bronco
Ford Bronco Concept
Ford has introduced a number of brutish, silver truck concepts. This is the best of the bunch.

19. Chevrolet Nomad
Chevrolet Nomad Concept
It mixes retro and originality rather than just relying on the work a designer completed 40 years ago.

18. Volvo 3CC
Volvo 3CC concept
Blissfully abnormal, but with a purpose.

17. Lamborghini Estoque
Lamborghini Estoque
Yes, the modern Miura concept is more eye-catching, but its not original. This sharp-edged knife of a sedan is modern Lamborghini at its best.

16. Infiniti Essence
Infiniti Essence Concept
Its very curvy and flowy and long and low and wide.

15. Chevrolet Code 130R
Chevrolet Code 130R
This is perfect for making auto writers say, "But Chevy, there really is a market for this." Probably not.

14. Buick Velite
Buick Velite concept
Theyll give us a version of the Opel Cascada. This would be so much more in keeping with Buicks premium history.

13. Ford Interceptor
Ford Interceptor concept
Should we be surprised that a traditional American automaker can design an impressive, classically American full-size sedan?

12. Dodge M80
dodge m80 concept
Itd be a Ram if they introduced it now. Regardless, it strikes a nice balance between outlandish and realistic.

11. Dodge Hornet
Dodge Hornet Concept
Its not pretty, but its a Dodge subcompact with proper Dodge attitude.

10. Kia GT4 Stinger
Kia GT4 Stinger Concept
On a list full of stuff that wont or didnt or cant happen, the GT4 Stinger might have a future.

9. Mazda Shinari
Mazda Shinari Concept
The production 6 looks good. But with no limitations, Mazda can do way better.

8. Volvo Coupe
Volvo Coupe Concept
Classic proportions mix with Volvos classic and modern flavours.

7. Toyota FT-1
Toyota FT-1 Concept
When TVR takes over Toyota.

6. Ford Start
Ford Start Concept
Smooth like a beautiful bubble.

5. BMW X Coupe
BMW X Coupe concept
Bangle themes - on the right day, in the right light, in the right mood - pleased the right (or wrong?) person.

4. Volvo XC Coupe
Volvo XC Coupe Concept
Just not quite as good as #3.

3. Volvo Estate
Volvo Estate Concept
Nobody does wagons like Volvo. Volvo, unfortunately, doesnt do wagons like this.

2. Cadillac Sixteen
Cadillac Sixteen Concept
Why is the Escalade SUV left on its own to be a big, bold, high-priced Cadillac?

1. Volkswagen Bulli
Volkswagen Bulli Concept
Take my money.

BMW 120 Plenty Of Power In All The Right Places

BMW has the some of the worlds finest engineering, and this leading edge build quality is still very
much apparent in the Baby Beemer. Amazingly, the BMW 120d has the performance figures to not only match but to better the petrol alternative. And with a fuel economy offically being claimed at 6.6 L/100 km, one would wonder "Why not a diesel?"

With 115 KW of power in the latest version and a time of around 8 second to reach 100 km/h from a standstill, these are some serious perfomance figures in a small car of this typeand practicatily. The manufactures top speed is quoted at being over 220 km/h. That, in my book, is quite impressive from a 2 litre turbo diesel engine. Lets just add here that the BMW 120d also has a thumping 340 Nm of torque on tap at alow 1750 rpm.

With ABS (Anti Lock Brakes), ESP (Electronic Stability), dynamic stability control, front seabelt pretensioners, and front driver and passenger airbags plus front side airbags, the BMW 120d is well equipped in the safety arena. Crash tests have rated the BMW 120d with a five star, too.

Perhaps not a car for big families, but the BMW 120d is certainly fantastic as a second car or for a couple to own. And with crisp handling ant loads of grip, the BMW 120d is a very pleasing small car alternative.

2013 Alfa Romeo 4C back to the U S market

The last new car Alfa Romeo was officially sold in 1994 in the United States. After that, the Italians moved out of the U.S. business. Now take the long awaited re-entry of Alfa Romeo to the U.S. market forms. Such as "Automotive News" reports, it should be in the first half of 2013 so far.

Alfa Romeo C4 2013

With its spearhead, the model built at Maserati 4C want to make the Italians, the Americans directly in the heart of their car and convince them of the emotional Italian cars. This they succeeded once before with the Alfa Romeo Spider-round stern, which gained after the movie with Dustin Hoffman leaving examination in 1967 achieved cult status in the United States.

But the awakening will of the emotions with the 2013 Alfa Romeo 4C sports car is only one side of the business. Even if it were possible for. The other consists of hard facts. The repeatedly postponed entry to the U.S. market is dominated by economic imperatives, which must be achieved. Has since formed an alliance with Chrysler, Fiat, seeing those who set the conditions for a successful comeback, however, increased significantly. At the same time it is for the young partnership, the biggest challenge. Thanks to partners at Chrysler dealers for the distribution level, everything is ready.

Fiats management is hoping secretly that the Alfa Romeo brand in the group can play a similar role, such as Audi within the VW family. Audi provides 40 percent share in VW profits in the U.S. and within the group embodies the technology substrate. With the sporty 4C, the Italian-American community is aimed at customers in the camp of the BMW Z4, Mercedes SLK and Porsche Boxster drivers. On the modular platform of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and Dogde Dart will then be presented in the second half of 2013, the new Giulia is expected to reach the European market in 2014 America. Currently, the Italians do not tell where they want to build the new Giulia, whether in Italy or the United States. As a favorite is the U.S. production.

2013 Ford Fusion Has Been Revealed At The Detroit Motor Show

The new Ford Fusion for 2013 has been revealed at the Detroit Motor Show, Ford Motor Company launched its new, completely redesigned version and looks like a tweaked Mondeo 2012 with Aston Martins Grill on the front. The line-up will include a plug-in hybrid sedan Ford, not that it is a bad thing. Fusion 2013 in the U.S. also will be a 2013 Ford Mondeo for Europe.

The Fusion Energy will go on sale in Europe next year as the Ford Mondeo. Up to now, the Fusion and Mondeo have been entirely different, albeit similarly sized, cars. But Ford has been working to have fewer different models around the world. To that end, the next-generation Ford Escape will be the same as the Ford Kuga SUV sold in Europe while the Focus and Fiesta small cars are also be the same cars in the U.S. as elsewhere.

Finally, after what has seemed like a decade’s worth of groaning by enthusiasts and pundits alike, Ford is bringing the Mondeo stateside by way of its global platform. That means, we get all of the important underpinnings that matter shrouded in an sexy, yeah we said sexy, new sheetmetal and interior. Just look at that grille. For giddy-up, Ford is offering, in a decidedly European manner, to give users the choice of a variety of powertrain options. How many? Whatever five different engines, two transmissions, and a front-wheel or all-wheel drive option add up to be. You can do the math. Engines will range from a four-cylinder 170 horsepower (170 lb-ft torque) to an EcoBoost 237 horsepower (250 lb-ft torque) mill, or two hybrid engines. One, which gets roughly the same gas mileage as a Prius, and the other, a plug-in hybrid called the Ford Fusion Energi, that’s miserly enough to sip fuel at an effective 100 miles per gallon. If you happen to have a financially allergic reaction to gas stations, this is the equivalent of vehicular Allegra.

With the 2013 Ford Fusion, there’s no shortage of choice, and there’s certainly no shortage in the looks, technology, or safety department either. You can expect to see lane guidance, blind-spot detection, active park assist, MyFord Touch, Microsoft SYNC, even Apps all packed into the Fusion along with airbags in every direction. In combination, Ford may just have created what amounts to be the best looking American made sedan we’ve seen since, well, the Taurus SHO. Even more exciting? This time, Americans get the Fusion first.

Ford Fusion Safety Features
The Ford Fusion has many safety features that are great ways to get a lower premium on your insurance. The 2013 Ford Fusion is equipped with the following safety features:
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Stability control
  • Front-impact airbags
  • Side-impact airbags
  • Overhead airbags
  • Pretensioners
  • Security System

Our friend and photographer spy Palbay just noticed the first BMW X3 3.0 diesel on American soil. diesel prototype has been spotted in the Spartanburg area and makes it interesting find, because BMW currently offers the only model in North America xDrive35d. BMW has not announced plans to introduce a diesel X3 in the United States, and these images will create even more speculation on future models of the X3. The test mule spotted also equipped with aggressive and sporty M Sport package, but with a different selection of wheels from those shown in official photographs and the Salon de lAutomobile in Paris. The 3.0-liter diesel engine in the X3 xDrive30d he started last year when the 530d F10 is for sale. and shortly after BMW began offering the turbocharged 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder model in the X5 xDrive30d.
